Over the past year, Brooke Mason, of Ayres Rock Photography, and I have worked together several
times, and for those that don't already know, I want to tell you what
an AMAZING photographer she is! Not only amazing, but a great person as
well...
The first time I met Brooke was during a photo shoot, and since then we
have become great friends. Watching the way she works and seeing the
results of her creativity, I think it is fair to say that she is the
next big thing in Plus Size Photography -- just take a look at her
Winter Fashion Editorial in the last issue and you are sure to agree!
In this issue of Venus Diva Magazine, it is my absolute pleasure to
announce that Brooke has officially joined Venus Diva Magazine as the
staff photographer! Get to know our latest addition and wonderful friend...
[Christy] At what point in your life did you decide you wanted to become a photographer?
[Brooke] Well, I was doing photography at school when I was
16 years old, before I even thought about doing anything else really. It
just came naturally for me. And when everyone was on their lunch break
enjoying the sunshine, I was in the darkroom experimenting with new
concepts. I started out doing a lot of black and white images, very
avante garde type styles. But always people, I love photographing
people.
[Christy] When shooting plus size models is there really a difference?
[Brooke] Yes it is different. The photographer has to have a
good eye and be seeing many angles at one time to bring out the best in
the model. I think angles are very important. Also how I can represent
the Plus Model differs from another model; a plus model has to be
classy to be successful. So photographed in that light is key.
[Christy] How do you describe your style of shooting?
[Brooke] Gosh that's hard. Well, my style has been described as edgy and glamorous. So that sounds pretty good.
[Christy] Have you always shot plus size models or did you discover plus size modeling?
[Brooke] Hmmm, I didn't ever really think about it as two
different categories honestly. So yes I've always shot all sized
people, all ages and both sexes. I guess that's sort of a boring answer.
[Christy] What advice do you have for photographers looking to shoot plus size models?
[Brooke] Focus on your own individual style and go with it. When
you're true to yourself, that's when you can be successful. People will
love you for that.
[Christy] What do you like to do in your spare time?
[Brooke] What's that? Only kidding. I like to relax, since I am
always so busy and life can be so chaotic... airports, setting up for
shoots, thinking about new concepts and editing, etc. So sleep is always
very nice :-)
[Christy] Where can we see more of your work?
[Brooke] Well, keep your eyes open for this coming year; I have
some big goals planned. And you can always check out my website and see
what's going on at
