Bright Lights, Big Ass... Yet Another Memoir by Jen Lancaster, 5/01/2007
Jen Lancaster is a witty Diva that can write her socks off (and for
those familiar with her 'Quaker-like modesty,' you understand exactly
why I chose socks instead of pants)!
In
Bright Lights, Big Ass Lancaster leaves no stone unturned. From
Rachel Ray to the long overdue trip to the 'girlie doctor' (and
everything in between), Jen's fearless, comic, cutting wit takes
readers on a laugh-out-loud look at life in the windy city.
Although Sex In the City gave us a pretty illusion as to how modern
city gals live and love, Jen gives a not-so-fabulous, albeit hilarious,
look at city living and how she learned to love and appreciate her
strange, silly, unsophisticated urban life. Readers loved and
loathed Lancaster in her first memoir,
Bitter Is The New Black, as she
was the kind of woman who unapologetically had it all, let everyone
know it, but never appreciated it until she was laid off and faced the
hard reality of being an out-of-work overachiever.
Even amidst coupon clipping, jewelry pawning, and temp job slaving Jen
kept her head held high and vowed to continue living unsexy in the
city, until ultimately the mature decision had to be made that it was
time to move away from the "deluxe apartment in the sky," to a more
affordable area. Ok, more like her apartment building made the
decision that she couldn't live in her penthouse for free.
But regardless of where in the city she goes there's misadventures to
be had what with: convenient public transportation hardly being all
that convenient, trading take-out for home cooked meals that resemble
science experiments gone awry, and learning to stay at home (instead of
hitting the trendy bars) and enjoy spending quality time with Fletch
and the dogs while spying on the creepy neighbors (Jen's got homeland
security on speed dial). Lancaster captures all the comical
pitfalls and appreciates the small rewards that come with the hustle
and bustle of city dwelling, reminding readers that even if you have to
scrape to get by, it's better than being stuck in the suburbs.
