Spring is the season when the earth sheds the muted tones of winter for
the vibrant kaleidoscope of spring colors. From red tulips to bright
yellow daffodils, color is everywhere and we feel a sense of renewal.
It's no wonder spring is one of the most popular seasons for weddings
as brides to be take advantage of nature's palette. However there is
one color all brides should consider for their wedding and that's green.
I'm not suggesting a parade of green colored dresses. I'm talking about
ways that you can green your wedding to help protect our planet. Here
are some ways you can green your wedding.
Wedding Gowns/Wedding Attire - If possible look for designers
who use sustainable fabrics (i.e. organic cotton) to make their gowns.
Adele Weschler offers an Eco Couture Collection of stylish designs that
are environment conscious. Other designers and bridal gown companies
are getting in on the act as well go online and do a little research to
see what's out there.
Bridesmaids Dresses - Look for styles of gowns that can really
be worn again or altered so your attendants can use them for another
occasion. Remember 27 Dresses? Although it's funny to think about a
closet full of gowns that will never see the light of day again, a
dress that has a life beyond your wedding party is a great value. And
your bridesmaids will thank you.
Flowers - Instead of going for imported exotic flowers go with
locally grown seasonal flowers. Work with your florist to see what
flowers are available and discuss how you can utilize them for your
wedding. Be open to alternative options like plants or fruits to help
liven up your décor.
Green your menu - Whether you're going with an on site catering
facility or an off site caterer, check to see if your caterer is using
local ingredients to prepare your meal. When chefs take advantage of
local produce, meat and fish not only are they supporting the local
economy and reducing the impact on the environment (shorter
transportation=less emissions), they're also increasing the flavor and
freshness of the food they prepare.
Green your cake -Look for a baker that uses organic ingredients
in their cakes. When bakers use organic flour, sugar, chocolate,
flavorings and fruits they lessen the carbon imprint. You can go to
your local health food store or green market to help you find a good
'green' baker.
With an average of about 2.5 million weddings a year, if every bride
did one eco-minded thing, it would quickly add up to make a big
difference in reducing pressure on our planet. So do a little research,
it's not so hard to be green.
