It's May and we are celebrating MOM! What do all
mothers have in common, besides the obvious? STRESS! From
exuberant kids, being late for work, traffic jams, and personal
disappointments; stress is here to stay! Yet, stress is an important
physiological function; let's put it this way diva, if we didn't have
stress we wouldn't get anything done! Doses of stress are normal
and perfectly healthy.
What are the kinds of stress? Think of stress in
terms of duration: short or long. A quick burst of stress would be
short-term stress such as a flat tire. Long-term stress would
include a divorce or even new job. All forms of stress add up
over time and can play games with your body.
Some early signs of stress?
- Headache
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Upset Stomach
- Anger
- Sleep dysfunction
- Short-temper
Stress can also make medical conditions that you already have
worsen! If you are Diabetic, unmanaged stress can make glucose
control difficult. Diva if your blood pressure is already
reaching the clouds, prolonged stress can skyrocket this condition.
How can I manage my stress? I come with good news!
As women, we tend to use a coping mechanism for stressful events called
'befriending'. This means we like to ask for help, seek out
support from friends and family.
Other management strategies:
- EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE!
- Sleep
- Set LIMITS
- Talk to Friends
- Compromise
- Laugh
- Eat Right
- Time for Yourself
- Seek Professional Help
Mom's you deserve to feel relaxed and adored. Remember, stress is
vital to a healthy life, within limits. Don't sweat the small
stuff; find time for yourself everyday, and EXERCISE. If stress
is pushing you down, seek help. Everyone needs it from time to
time. I know I have! From balancing a small child in medical
school in a new city, to newfound attention and commitments as Miss
Plus America Elite 2007, I know a lot about stress and the illnesses
associated. Exercise and speaking up was my medicine. Bottom
line, moms take care of yourself first and your family will thank you
later.
